We’ve put our General Manager Shawn Brosnan under the microscope to ask him some questions about how Formiga1 works towards adding value and creating lasting relationships with their customers. We’ve asked him a series of questions that we hope will give you a good understanding of the role of a building surveyor in a development project, how they add value and what to look for in a quality building surveyor. Here are our questions and answers.


Q: What are some things you wish people knew about building surveyors before they started their development project?

A:”I think the biggest one is talking to us before you start. We get a lot of people calling us part way through or at the commencement of building the project, only to discover they have issues with plans or fire exits aren’t up to standard, etc. If a client talks to us in the very early stages of a development project we can help them navigate any issue before they become big, expensive problems.”

Q: How can people make the right choice when choosing a building surveyor?

A:”Making sure you’ve got a company that has experience in the type of project you’re working on is paramount. Whilst many buildings look the same from the outside, there are lots of little intricacies involved with different building types. Schools and aged care facilities aren’t the same as shops and hotels for example and making sure you’ve got a building surveyor that understands your industry and is experienced with a proven track record with your project type will go a long way in making sure your project runs smoothly.”

Q: What’s something people might not know about building surveyors in general?

A: “The one that comes as a large surprise to many people is how we can save them time and money. Like any industry, you get what you pay for and if you get someone with the right experience, knowledge and background it can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. I’ve heard loads of horror stories over the years where people have gone for the cheaper option, only to find out the wrong components or building elements have been installed and have to be heavily modified or worse, completely replaced which can be a lengthy and expensive exercise.”

Q: So what do building surveyors do on a project?

A: “I like to think of it as we’re problem solvers. We can help clients navigate the sometimes murky waters of building compliance and help them solve minor issues before they become big problems. We help them with understanding applications and carry out inspections of all the work being undertaken. We help them identify any potential defects in the building design  and during construction, and make sure everything is up to code to meet all appropriate building standards.”

Q: What can people expect when they engage with a building surveyor like Formiga1?

A: “Personally I think the main focus of any building surveyor is to bring value to your customers. That can be done in a lot of different ways.
